Many people think of poetry and songs as the same thing, and in some aspects they can be, but as we should all know, there is definitely much more to music than just good lyrics. Alot of it even has to do with the style of music that you play.
Some artists, for instance The Sex Pistols, will state that lyrics are the most important part of the song, and that if you're listening to any other aspect, then you are wrong. Other artists, most notably Kurt Cobain, would simply straight out tell you that lyrics don't matter, and that a popular song is determined by the overall sound. Which I will agree with to an extent.
I actually believe that a well written song should have a balance of both. Because we all know that there are artists out there who basically wouldn't exist without the power of good lyrics, vice versa. It's not the end of the world if your lyrics suck, or as some might say, "mysterious", however, it's not going to hurt you if your lyrics are good, and insightful. It's one of those things that can only help.
So, to add this as one of your songwriting skills, try writing a kick ass lyric, or piece of poetry, singing it out loud, and placing a harmony (maybe a few guitar chords) around it. You may be surprised as to what you come up with.
